Unity’s New Fee Structure: What It Means for Game Developers

“Yes, this is a price increase and it will only affect a small subset of current Unity Editor users”

Unity, the popular game engine development platform, has been facing backlash from game developers over its plans to introduce a new per-install fee for games that generate over $200,000 in revenue or have over 200,000 installs. The fee, which will be $0.20 per install, will go into effect on January 1, 2024.

Unity has defended the fee, saying it is necessary to “continue investing in and growing our platform” and “ensure that Unity remains accessible to all developers, regardless of their size or budget.” However, many game developers have argued that the fee is unfair and will disproportionately impact small and independent developers.

In response to the backlash, Unity has rushed to clarify its plans. In a blog post, the company said it will provide a grace period of six months for developers to transition to the new fee structure. Additionally, Unity said that it will be waiving the fee for games that are developed by students, non-profits, and educational institutions.

It remains to be seen whether these changes will be enough to appease game developers. However, the backlash against Unity’s price increase plan is a reminder of the power that game developers have. In the past, game developers have successfully pressured companies like Apple and Google to change their policies. It is possible that they will be able to do the same with Unity.

Here are some of the reactions from game developers to Unity’s price increase plan:

  • “This is a huge blow to indie developers. Unity is already the most expensive game engine on the market, and this fee will make it even more difficult for small teams to make games.” – Rami Ismail, game developer and co-founder of Vlambeer
  • “This is a terrible decision by Unity. It will hurt the indie game community and make it harder for developers to make games.” – Brandon Sheffield, game developer and co-founder of Devolver Digital
  • “I’m really disappointed in Unity. This fee is going to hurt a lot of developers, and it’s not clear why they’re doing it.” – Mike Rose, game developer and founder of No More Robots

It is still too early to say the long-term impact of Unity’s price increase plan. However, it is clear that the plan has already caused a lot of anger and frustration among game developers. It will be interesting to see how Unity responds to the backlash and whether it is able to mitigate the negative impact of the plan.
