In the latest news, it is revealed that Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella will be adding Mustafa Suleyman (co-founder of DeepMind) to his company.
The DeepMind start-up was founded by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman in September 2010.
Mustafa Suleyman is a co-founder of DeepMind, which became a leading artificial intelligence research lab after Google bought it in 2014. Google officially announced on January 26, 2014, that it had acquired DeepMind for an estimated sum of $400 million to $650 million.
With the help of Google DeepMind, a computer that closely mimics short-term memory in the human brain has been created. Neural network models that learn how to play video games in a manner akin to that of humans have also been developed. Neural Turing machines are neural networks that can access external memory like typical Turing machines.
In 2022, Suleyman departed from Google parent Alphabet to take a co-founding and CEO role at the startup Inflection AI. Karén Simonyan was also a co-founder and chief scientist at Inflection.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced the hiring of Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan to the company and they both will join a new organization – Microsoft AI, which will be responsible for developing Copilot as well as other consumer AI products and research.
Mustafa is joining the senior leadership team (SLT) and will report to Satya Nadella as the CEO and EVP (Executive Vice President) of Microsoft AI. As Chief Scientist, Karén will be working under Mustafa’s direction in this group.
Mustafa’s tweet about joining Microsoft as CEO of Microsoft AI:
As the founder of both DeepMind and Inflection, Satya Nadella has known Suleyman for some years and has expressed his admiration for him in a memo to Microsoft employees.
In the memo, Satya Nadella has written this statement :
“We have a real shot to build technology that was once thought impossible and that lives up to our mission to ensure the benefits of AI reach every person and organization on the planet, safely and responsibly.”
Microsoft’s biggest competitor in the field of AI is Google and Microsoft will be trying to surpass Google to become stronger and better.
A key component of Microsoft’s AI strategy is deal-making. In addition to investing $13 billion in OpenAI, it also partnered with Mistral, a French start-up. Microsoft’s cloud computing platform is being used by both startups to develop their massive language models. The manufacturer of Windows is integrating their services into its own products in return.
With the hiring of Suleyman – an expert in AI technology, Microsoft will get a stronger grip on AI products and it will help to enhance its services. It also has given them an advantage over other tough competitors in the tech market to bring better products.
